Colleagues,

New national standards for higher education in Environment and Sustainability

We are proud to announce new national standards are now available to support the design and delivery of innovative higher education in the Environment and Sustainability field. The standards are included in the newly published Learning and Teaching Academic Standards Statement for Environment and Sustainability, available from the project website, http://environmentltas.gradschool.edu.au/, and via the Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching website (http://www.olt.gov.au/project-learning-and-teaching-academic-standards-ltas-environment-and-environmental-sustainability-2).

The standards are grouped into four domains:

1. Transdisciplinary knowledge

2. Systemic understanding

3. Skills for environment and sustainability

4. Ethical practice.

The standards can be used to design and deliver innovative environment and sustainability higher education in Australia, and are endorsed by the Australian Council of Environmental Deans and Directors (ACEDD). ACEDD commissioned their development and the Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching provided grant funding for the development work, undertaken by a multi-institutional Project Team drawn from the University of Newcastle (lead institution), the Australian National University, Flinders University, Macquarie University and the University of New South Wales.

We thank the hundreds of tertiary educators and researchers, employers and practitioners, students, indigenous people and other environmental educators across Australia and beyond who all contributed their expertise and enthusiasm in various phases of the development work including face-to-face workshops, online questionnaires and piloting.

Can you help with disseminating the standards?
We invite you to help disseminate the standards through your collegial networks. There are three ways you can do this:

a. Forward this email to colleagues who may also be interested.

b. Submit a short notice about the standards to digital and hard copy disciplinary and professional newsletters, magazines and journals you subscribe to. A brief (less than 150 words) text is included below - feel free to use this as is or to amend it to fit your publication. (We would appreciate keeping track of where notices are being run - please let us know how you get on.)

c. If your newsletter, magazine or journal would prefer a longer piece, please be in touch to discuss - we're happy to help.

The standards were crafted across twelve months of intensive development work, and an infographic summarising the development of the standards is also available at the project website (http://environmentltas.gradschool.edu.au/).

For more information about the standards and the process of their development please contact the co-leaders of the project to develop the standards, Dr Bonnie McBain (Bonnie.McBain at newcastle.edu.au<mailto:Bonnie.McBain at newcastle.edu.au>) or Dr Liam Phelan (Liam.Phelan at newcastle.edu.au<mailto:Liam.Phelan at newcastle.edu.au>).
