I would like to gauge if there is sufficient interest amongst geographers to start a new IAG study group for "Animal Geography".
The topic includes (but is not restricted to) such focii as human impact on habitat for particular species, the effects of natural disasters such as floods and bushfires on wildlife populations, human-animal relations (eg provision for and inclusion of pets in social processes such as urban development, the role of animals (whether domestic, feral or native species) in local communities or economies, the ethical and environmental implications of various animal husbandry and production practices, relationships between the geographical distribution of species and human factors and so on.
The broader field of human-animal relations and/or anthrozoology is attracting more interest these days but animal geography is still marginal in comparison to other sub fields in geography. With support from like minded colleagues, I would like to promote the impact of work in animal geography.
If you are interested in helping to set up or join the proposed Animal Geography Study Group and/or contribute to a session at the 2016 IAG Conference, please contact me at lisel.odwyer at flinders.edu.au
