Subject: [Iag-list] Vale Professor Martyn Webb, 1925-2016

Dear All,
It is with sadness that I write to inform you of the death of Emeritus Professor Martyn Webb.
Martyn was the foundation Professor of Geography at The University of Western Australia, having arrived in 1964 from Oxford University. He led the establishment of the Department of Geography, and was Head of Department until the mid 1970s before retiring in 1986.
Under Martyn’s initial leadership, the Department grew to be prominent in teaching and research across a number of important areas including urban studies, environmental change, rural development and land management. He was also a passionate advocate for field-based education, and his trips to rural Western Australia are still fondly remembered by students and the host communities.
From the moment of his arrival, Martyn embraced Western Australia and was a passionate commentator and advocate on matters related to urban planning, local government and regional development. Indeed, until just a few weeks ago he was preparing letters for the Premier and others on various ‘geographical’ issues.
The numerous regional histories written in collaboration with his late wife Audrey are testament to his commitment to his adopted State and its people. Perhaps the finest work here is 1000 page history of Kalgoorie-Boulder - Golden Destiny.
I atttach a photo of Martyn with former students taken at the Geography Department 50th Celebrations in November 2014
