There is a vacancy for the position of a Research Fellow (ANU Level B, Step 2), specialising in gender and water management in developing countries of the Asia-Pacific Region under the mentorship of Associate Professor Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt.

ANU College of Asia and the Pacific leads intellectual engagement with the Asia-Pacific region through research, education and contributions to public debate, and seeks to set the international standard for scholarship concerning the region. Crawford School of Public Policy is Australia's premier public policy school, with recognised world-class expertise and experience in resource and environmental management and development, and on key Asia-Pacific countries.

The Research Fellow will be based in the Resource, Environment & Development Group (RE&D) within the Crawford School of Public Policy, and will provide research support to the DFAT-funded Sustainable Development Investment Portfolio (SDIP), held by Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (Land and Water Division).The successful applicant will play a central role in integrating gender into the ongoing work in SDIP on water management, and will be under the overall supervision of Dr Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt. The position is available initially for 2 years, but will most likely be extended to a third year.

Position Dimension & Relationships:
The primary objective of the appointment is to engage in research that advances understanding of the relationships between gender, livelihoods and water resources management with the aim of embedding gender and livelihoods into water resources management, including the simulation (modelling) of water - its availability, its regulation, and its allocation. The applicant will work with researchers in CSIRO's Land and Water and will be focussed on basin planning in South Asia.

A second objective is to provide a bridge that links R&D activities between similar domain researchers in CSIRO and the Crawford School, providing project and research opportunities and challenges that are of benefit to both organisations.

The Research Fellow will be based half-time in Crawford School and half-time in CSIRO Land & Water Systems. S/He will report to Dr Lahiri-Dutt and work closely with the project staff, academic colleagues and professional staff within RE&D and the School.

Role Statement:
Under the broad direction of the SDIP researchers and Dr Lahiri-Dutt, the Research Fellow will:

*                     Work on the DFAT-funded Sustainable Development Investment Portfolio.

*                     Coordinate the integration of gender in the ongoing work by the SDIP researchers.

*                     Develop research outputs from and add further material to livelihoods and gender into SDIP outputs.

*                     Undertake fieldwork with SDIP researchers, participate in SDIP activities (such as workshops) and present the work in meetings.

*                     Publish the research findings in high-quality journals.

*                     Contribute regularly or occasionally to teaching activities of RE&D.

*                     Participate in the supervision and training of research students where appropriate.

*                     Collaborate with senior staff to actively seek and secure external funding, assist to prepare and submit research proposals to external funding bodies as appropriate.

*                     Undertake administrative tasks relevant to the role and position.

*                     Comply with all ANU policies and procedures, and in particular those relating to work health and safety and equal opportunity.

*                     Other duties as allocated by the supervisor consistent with the classification of the position.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

1.                  PhD in a relevant social science discipline with a strong gender and development background.

2.                  Demonstrated track record of relevant research.

3.                  Demonstrated expertise in understanding, using and applying qualitative data on gender in context of developing countries.

4.                  Demonstrated aptitude to learn and/or experience with quantitative data.

5.                  Ability to undertake fieldwork independently and as part of a team.

6.                  Ability to work with interdisciplinary groups.

7.                  Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.

8.                  Demonstrated ability to communicate and interact effectively in a multidisciplinary academic environment, and to promote, develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships both nationally and internationally.

9.                  A demonstrated understanding of equal opportunity principles and policies and a commitment to their application in a university context.
