Rhythms of urban life: The politics and poetics of difference
Study Group alignment: Urban Geography
Session organisers: David Kelly, Deakin University, and Michele Lobo, Deakin University
For this session we invite papers that explore the rhythms, textures and vitalities of urban life. Such explorations call for diverse theoretical and methodological insights into the politics and poetics of difference that is animating, experimental, ethically responsive and transforming. Drawing inspiration from the work of Katherine Gibson, Deborah Bird Rose and Ruth Fincher (2015), we ask how can such insights from cities and 'ordinary' urban places engender fresh perspectives and new knowledges for living with difference in the Anthropocene. We call for listening and privileging marginalised knowledges of diversity and encounter in a human/more-than-human world. Suggested themes include (but are not limited to):

  * Social differentiation and stratification in cities - race, caste, class, ethnicity, religion and gender etc.
  * Difference and planetary urbanisation - lessons from urban-rural archipelagos in Australia and beyond
  * Non-western and Indigenous wisdom on difference, belonging and shared co-existence
  * Sensing the commons- Visual methods, participatory action research and creative interventions
  * The politics of vulnerability, resistance, resilience and resurgence
  *   Everyday Islam
