*Project title: Migration and the Resilience of Natural Hazards-Prone
Communities in Rural Australia*

Drawing in part on past research into the causes, incidence and landuse
planning implications of amenity-led rural settlement in Australia, this
project seeks to establish how high amenity rural communities situated in
natural hazards-prone environments plan for and respond to hazard events.
The purpose of the research is to examine the characteristics of migrants
to select high amenity rural areas, their understanding of the local hazard
environment (e.g. likely risk of particular hazards and their causes) and
personal knowledge of and approaches to natural hazard risk mitigation and
recovery measures. The research will involve a number of case-studies in
different areas of Australia, with different types and levels of
vulnerabilities and resilience in order to build a stronger conceptual and
analytical framework for incorporating migration into the creation of more
disaster-resistant communities.

Prof. Neil Argent (nargent at une.edu.au) and Dr Sonya Glavac (
