Monash University is hosting a human geography public lecture and panel
discussion on the theme of " "Re-thinking Melbourne in a network of world
cities", on 7 Dec, 12-2pm, State Library of Victoria Village Roadshow

*Professor Ben Derudder,* a leading international researcher on world city
networks, will discuss different world city rankings and draw upon
Melbourne as an example of how cities use livability rankings for marketing
and to provide insights into how cities compare to other global urban

Using the example of Melbourne, I will begin by distinguishing between
using the various rankings of ‘world city-ness’ (1) for superficial
purposes and (2) for delivering actual insight into a city’s position in
the world. The latter approach allows identifying a city’s strategic assets
in the world economy, which in turn gives policy and planning a more
concrete idea of what focus is needed in strategic planning processes.
Reviewing the position of Melbourne in some of the most well-known rankings
suggests a focus on quality of life, strong linkages to Asia, and its
higher education cluster in the planning process.

*Chair*: *Professor Chris Nash*, Foundation Professor of Journalism, Monash

*Panel participants: **Professor Ben Derudder*, University of Ghent,
Belgium; *Kate Vinot*: Director of City Strategy and Place, City of
Melbourne; *Professor Roz Hansen*: Independent chairperson of the
Ministerial Advisory Committee for Plan Melbourne Refresh and Professorial
Fellow, Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning, University of
Melbourne; *Vesy Deyanova*: International student, Monash University Master
of Environmental Management and Sustainability.
