Social Scientist: Social and Cultural Research

Scion is a Crown Research Institute specialising in research, science and technology development for the forestry industry, wood products and wood-derived materials. We lead new technology development for renewables, bioproducts and energy and the establishment of a broader based bio-economy.
In this role you will deliver high quality science through Scion social and cultural research projects, particularly those on risk, community resilience and natural hazard research. Your initial role primarily will include implementing participatory action research approaches to engage communities in natural hazard planning with a wildfire focus to increase community resilience. Future opportunities will exist to co-design new research using Kaupapa Māori approaches with a strong focus on excellence and impact.
To be successful in role you will have:

  *   A PhD or Master’s Degree in a social science or other appropriate discipline is preferred, plus experience in a relevant environment;
  *   An in-depth knowledge of qualitative and quantitative social science methods and approaches, preferably Kaupapa Māori approaches;
  *   An understanding of the New Zealand cultural environment;
  *   A demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective external relationships, including those with Māori; and
  *   Proven experience in community, Iwi, agency, end-user and/or client engagement.

The position is primarily designed to work with Lisa Langer, assistant research leader, Enabling Environments team of the Forest Systems research group and our new social scientist, risk and resilience, Andrea Grant. As a way of introducing ourselves to people who don’t know us we have included a few words about our research background.
Lisa Langer is a social scientist at Scion who has worked extensively in researching social and cultural aspects in a range of environments. She works with communities using action research and transdisciplinary approaches to enable community voices to shape research inquiry and analysis of knowledge. Lisa’s research covers wildfire, biosecurity and biowastes. She has worked with communities, in particular iwi, in remote parts of the country such as Karikari Peninsula in the Far North, urban centres, as well as rural districts such Kaikōura. Lisa enjoys working with communities and supporting the development of community-led solutions to build resilience to risk and meet their needs.
Andrea Grant is a social scientist that has recently moved from Australia where she has worked to better integrate social perspectives into rural environment policy planning and research processes. Since moving to New Zealand she has been developing an appreciation of differences in Māori and Western worldviews and seeks to use such differences to benefit community and sustainable development. Andrea is currently working on projects in biosecurity and wildfire to gain a better appreciation of social and cultural responses to risk, e.g., in designing socially acceptable technologies for urban pest eradication and appreciating voluntary activities in response to wildfire risk, and generate innovative thinking about socioecological  resilience.
