Welcome to the conservation revolution!

For the recently funded CON-VIVA<https://convivialconservation.com/con-viva/> project, we seek candidates for five postdoc positions and 1 PhD position. CON-VIVA is a three-year research project to understand the prospects for a new conservation paradigm, called convivial conservation,<https://convivialconservation.com/> within the broader context of contemporary ‘Anthropocene’ conservation discussions. CON-VIVA is funded through the Norface / Belmont Forum ‘Transformations to Sustainability’ (T2S) programme with a budget of €1,3 million over three years (from 1 December 2018 – 1 December 2021). It is implemented by a consortium led by Wageningen University in the Netherlands, and with Sheffield University (UK), University of Sao Paolo (Brazil), University of California, Santa Barbara (USA), University of Dodoma (Tanzania) and University of Helsinki (Finland) as principle collaborators.

Towards Convivial Conservation: Governing Human-Wildlife Relations in the Anthropocene (CON-VIVA) is a major research project funded by the Belmont Forum and NORFACE. It is one of the main ways thr…

CON-VIVA investigates the prospects for convivial conservation by comparing cutting-edge conservation cases that address human-wildlife conflict involving apex predators in Brazil, Finland, Tanzania and USA. Across the four cases the project seeks to ask four questions:

1. How are combined effects of austerity, habitat fragmentation and human-wildlife conflict influencing global conservation debates and policies?

2. How do these dynamics affect the relations between apex predators and people in diverse local contexts?

3. What common patterns and lessons for effective conservation can be learned from comparison across these different sites?

4. What novel landscape, governance and funding mechanisms can be developed or scaled up to address both global and local challenges in pursuit of convivial conservation?

To address these questions we seek to fill five post-doctoral research fellowships and a PhD studentship. Each post-doctoral research fellowship will entail a mixture of empirical, theoretical and conceptual research and project administration that combines duties required by the project, and a programme of work devised by the post-holder in consultation with their mentors.
