Mapping and the Imperial Agenda
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Edinburgh-based mapmaking firm of John Bartholomew & Son Ltd printed a huge range of maps for the Australian market. Christopher Fleet, map curator at the National Library of Scotland, mines the Bartholomew Archive and poses the question: how powerful were these maps in defining broader British imperial ideologies and in shaping our views of Australia?
