Interested in researching how crowd-funding platforms intersect with practices and politics of social welfare?

Applications are invited for a one-year Masters scholarship as part of a larger research project examining privately financed models of social welfare provision, led by Dr Tom Baker and funded by the Royal Society Te Aparangi.

The successful applicant will develop their own independent project related to crowd-funding and social welfare (broadly defined) in collaboration with the project leader.

The project is based within the School of Environment’s Geography program at the University of Auckland, though living away from Auckland can be negotiated. The scholarship includes tuition fees and a living stipend valued at NZ $17,000 p.a. (tax exempt) for one year. The preferred start date for the scholarship is March 2019.

It is expected that the candidate will hold a high quality bachelor degree in human geography, sociology, politics, or a cognate field, have experience or interest in public policy, and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for qualitative research. Both New Zealand and Australian applicants are eligible to apply. Applicants from a Maori background are particularly encouraged. Applicants must meet the University’s selection criteria for entry into a Master of Arts<http://www.arts.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/programmes/master-of-arts.html> (http://www.arts.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/programmes/master-of-arts.html) or Master of Science<http://www.science.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/our-programmes/op-msc.html> (http://www.science.auckland.ac.nz/en/about/our-programmes/op-msc.html).

Please direct any enquiries to Tom Baker at t.baker at auckland.ac.nz<mailto:t.baker at auckland.ac.nz>.

Applicants should send a brief cover letter, academic transcripts and contact details of two referees to t.baker at auckland.ac.nz<mailto:t.baker at auckland.ac.nz>. Applications will be reviewed from 30 November, but applicants are encouraged apply after that date.
