Session Title: The politics and places of plants

Session organisers: Catherine Phillips, University of Melbourne ; Jennifer Atchison, University of Wollongong ; Katarina Saltzman, University of Gothenburg

Plants are central to many sustainability debates - from food security to carbon sequestration. After repeated calls issued within and beyond geography for attention to human-plant relations and the agencies of plants, the worlds of plants are beginning to gain attention. This session is intended to explore the politics and places of plants - in relation with humans and otherwise. There is need to more closely examine the role of place and of politics in human-plant relations. This involves exploring the differentiations, normalisations, and contestations of plant belonging as well as considering where and how plants inhabit places, serving to reinscribe or challenge human-imposed spatio-temporal categorisations. How do plants act and relate to others in making and taking their own places? How do plants support, resist, or remain indifferent to efforts to manage ecosocial crises? How can we as researchers attune to new understandings of plants as active co-conspirators? These are some of the questions that inspire our thinking.

We invite papers that approach plant politics and/or plant places from diverse disciplinary, theoretical, and methodological positions. Themes may include, but are not limited to:

- reassessments of dualistic or singular assignations of plants (e.g., native/non-native ; urban/wilderness ; natural/modified)

- explorations of temporal aspects of plant worlds and relations, including interest in heritage plants, speculative plant futures, etc.

- boundaries and mobilities relating to biosecurity, assisted migration, rewilding, and novel ecologies

- care and conflict about/for/with plants in particular places (e.g., gardens, labs, parks) or fields (e.g., agriculture, conservation)

- possibilities and practicalities of developing ethico-political relations among people and plants
