Food, Senses and the City has recently been released in the Routledge Studies in Food, Society and the Environment series. This work explores the senses within the field of urban food studies to explore new understandings of how people live in cities and how we can better understand cities through food.
Drawing on case studies in the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe set across the food chain the book ‘feasts’ on a range of cross-cultural dishes: from sensuous Sardinian food activism, to alluring amba as culinary nostalgia, to rediscovering tastes of home through cake in Thuringia, or through market walks in Shantou, China, to upholding agroecological traditions through the skin in Ecuador – this book offers 14 rich cultural and firsthand accounts of ways people are (re)connecting through the senses. Their travels raise poignant themes of nostalgia, shared tastes overcoming differences, how to create a sense of home and belonging, a cross-species way of ‘knowing’, and a link between our past and present selves, to suggest ways to forge ahead new urban imaginaries.
In times when people and what we eat have become more isolated and distant, and where more than half the world’s population now live in cities that are increasingly larger, busier and more crowded, this volume contributes to ways the senses can generate new understandings of how people can live together. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of critical food studies, urban studies, geography and socio-cultural anthropology.
