This hybrid conference is collaboratively organised by RMIT University, Monash University, Swinburne University and the University of Melbourne and will take place both online and in-person in Melbourne on the unceded lands of the Wurundjeri people of the eastern Kulin Nations.
SOAC 2021 will focus on urban and regional transitions in the COVID recovery era to report and appraise the social, spatial, and economic consequences for equity, inclusion and justice. The conference aims to connect these questions to urban practice and inform more robust policy and public discussions about the emerging new futures of Australasian cities and regions.
We invite abstracts from urban researchers which address the conference theme drawing on research that is either explicitly focused on the Australasian cities context or highlights international comparative research that deliberately draws out new insights for Australasian cities and regions. See the SOAC 20201 website for more details on the track co-chairs and themes - https://www.soac2021.com/
Successful abstracts will be invited to submit a public policy-oriented article (800-1000 words) for inclusion in peer review published conference proceedings. To be considered for the Peter Harrison Memorial prizes for best paper and best PhD paper, a full paper (5000 words) will be invited for submission for peer review. Papers submitted for the award will be considered for inclusion in a special issue of the Journal of Urban Policy and Research linked specifically to the SOAC 2021 conference.

I acknowledge and pay my respects to the past, present and future Traditional Custodians and Elders of the Wurundjeri people on whose lands I live, learn, research, work and teach. I recognise that these lands and all urban areas in Australia have never been ceded. I commit to situating my research in relation to Indigenous sovereignty and learning how to live and work together on Country.
