Call for Papers
Symposium on Development, Governance and Politics in Peri-urban China
2016 AAG Annual Meeting, San Francisco, March 29-April 2, 2016
Organizers:
Zhigang Li (Sun Yat-sen University)
Yi Li (Nanjing University)
China has recently experienced rapid peripheral urbanization, which has led to cities¡¯ expansion into polycentric city-regions. As a result, the arena of urban politics
is moving from the intra-urban level towards the metropolitan area through urban expansion. Henceforth, we suggest that peri-urban has been turned into a critical field to examine the contemporary process of producing city-regions in Chinese context. Moreover,
issues with central-local/intra-state dynamics and scalar tensions between different levels of local state require more attention and theorization in future studies of Chinese urbanization.
Thus, we invite papers that are attentive to how city-regionalization unfolds in China and how policies and practices shape the future of China¡¯s city-region space and
governance. We welcome papers that address any issues pertinent to contemporary Chinese peri-urban development. Topics may include but are not limited to:
- City-region building, peri-urban governance and metropolitics
- Urban administrative change and inter-governmental relations
- City-regionalism and inter-locality cooperation
- Suburbanization and suburbanism
- Mega-project and new town development
- Inter-urban mass transit and urban spatial restructuring
- Polycentric city-region and urban and regional planning
- Re-emerging regional policies and National New Districts
- Regional unbalanced development and urban-rural inequalities
- Urban and rural land use change and conflict
- Landless peasants and urban villages
