The School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Services is ranked number 1 in Earth and Environmental Sciences in Australia according the Nature Index and QS rankings. It has built a world-class research environment, with research encompassing a diverse range of topics from the core of the Earth to its upper atmosphere. Research within BEES is clustered within four general thematic areas: ecology and evolutionary biology; climate science; environmental change, sustainability and resources; and paleoenvironments and earth history.

The School hosts several unique associated research centres and facilities, including ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes, Climate Change Research Centre, Centre for Ecosystem Science, Evolution & Ecology Research Centre, Centre for Marine Science and Innovation and the Australian Centre for Astrobiology.

Reporting directly to the Faculty Dean, you will play a significant role in developing a strategic vision for the School that is aligned to both the UNSW 2025 Strategy and Faculty strategies. A proven academic leader with boundless intellectual enthusiasm, you will engage and motivate staff within the School to realise that vision.

You will continuously improve the student experience including the design, development, delivery and assessment of high quality teaching programs, ensuring that outcomes and standards in research, education, knowledge exchange, partnerships in the School remain at an extremely high level.

The Head of School will be responsible for building the School’s external profile and reputation, including with potential future students and by forging partnerships with industry, government, alumni and other external parties.

A respected scholar with a stellar track record of research in a related discipline, you possess a deep understanding of core academic values and priorities in a leading, research intensive international university. Furthermore, your demonstrated track record of inspiring teams and fostering an environment of innovation and excellence will enable you to thrive in this highly visible leadership role.
